Conquering the Dolomites: Our Adventure from Passo Falzarego to Rifugio Lagazuoi
Ever had one of those days where you think, "Let's climb a mountain via a historic war path"? No? Just us? Well, buckle up, because this is the tale of our trek from Passo Falzarego to Rifugio Lagazuoi (2750m), featuring via ferratas, World War I tunnels, and a sunburn to remember.
9/5/2024
The Game Plan:
Our mission was to ascend to Rifugio Lagazuoi via the Sentiero Kaiserjäger (Kaiserjäger Path), a route steeped in history and offering panoramic vistas. For the descent, we aimed to navigate near the World War I tunnels, relics of the battles between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces. Alternatively, there's a gondola lift available directly from Passo Falzarego to the refuge for those seeking a more relaxed journey. (lagazuoi.it)
Gear Up:
Not knowing what to expect, we came prepared with harnesses and helmets. In hindsight, the via ferrata was manageable without them, but better safe than sorry, right? The majority of the ascent was on well-marked paths, with occasional wooden ladders, narrow trails, and a metal bridge adding to the adventure. The entire route treated us to breathtaking landscapes that seemed straight out of a postcard.
Finding the Trailhead:
Here's where things got interesting. The trailhead wasn't clearly marked, and our trusty Google Maps led us astray. We ended up paralleling the main road, bushwhacking through an unmarked meadow, and eventually stumbled upon a path leading to the Sentiero Kaiserjäger. A bit of a detour, but hey, what's an adventure without a little off-roading?
The Ascent:
Once on track, the climb was invigorating. The via ferrata sections were interspersed with wooden ladders and narrow trails. The highlight was crossing a sturdy suspension bridge, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The path was well-equipped with fixed cables, making it suitable even for younger hikers. The Descent:
After leaving the refuge, the descent took us alongside the World War I tunnels, offering fascinating glimpses into the past. The trenches and fortifications scattered throughout the route served as powerful reminders of the region's history. We took a peek inside a few of the tunnels, but they didn’t seem inviting enough for a full exploration, so we continued our journey down the trail that ran parallel to them. (lagazuoi.it)
Upon exiting the via ferrata, we reached the ridge where Piccolo Lagazuoi welcomed us with open arms. From here, a well-maintained trail leads all the way to the refuge, featuring a section of suspended metal walkway. The path meanders along the ridge, offering breathtaking views on both sides. The final stretch to the refuge takes approximately 45 minutes, making for a rewarding conclusion to the climb.
